Shop till you drop
You may still be in the throes of Christmas shopping but before you know it we will be entering a New Year. Time flies quickly and of course Christmas will roll around again before you hardly know it. These days money is tight for many people and so value for money is key.
After Christmas you may be all shopped out but what about bagging a bargain in the January sales?
The run up to Christmas will have seen you spending as if there would be no tomorrow. The last thing you want to do after Christmas is go shopping, right? Well perhaps shopping in the Post Christmas or January sales might be a good idea.
Sales always have pitfalls. Some of the sale items will be past their best, out of date or maybe simply tacky. However there will be good deals to be had.
The January Sales tend to start on Boxing Day these days, or earlier, so there is time to bag a bargain, or two.
Here is the important advice first
If money is tight stay away from the Sales, post or pre Christmas. It is so easy to be tempted to spend when you see what appears to be a bargain. If you do not really want or need the item, and especially if you cannot afford it, then it is not a bargain.
Do not take a credit card or debit card with you to the Sales unless you know when to stop spending. Te option to buy today and pay in the future can be disastrous.
The rate of VAT, value added tax, in the UK increased to 20% in January 2011. Make sure that you know the price of any goods you buy, including any such taxes.
The January Sales often offer better discounts in the online versions. However you will have to take into account any delivery charges. By now you will probably have received lots of emails which are really fliers advertising sales. Ensure that the price is truly competitive, by comparing prices like for like online.
Be careful about email offers. Many such offers have brief time scales designed to make you but without due thought.
Shopping online will save you travel costs and time plus you can shop from the safety of your home.
High Street Sales Many Sales on the High Street will be in full swing well before Christmas. Perhaps the best bargains have already been snapped up. However you may be able to make some savings on:-
Christmas cards and wrapping paraphernalia. This could save you money for the following Christmas.
Diaries and calendars, for next year should be reduced in price.
Items which are suitable for up and coming Anniversaries, Birthdays and even Valentine's Day. Perfumes for men and women are usually reduced in price after Christmas. January is cold and it will be a long time until Spring. The January Sales always have scarves, jumpers, cardigans, boots, socks, gloves and hats at reduced prices.
Have some fun whilst you try to bag a bargain. Use the sales as a fun day out and incorporate lunch. Do more window shopping than actual spending and perhaps try to find some inspiration for next year's Christmas Gifts.
Make sure that you are not just one more bad statistic of the January or Post Christmas Sales.
